Non equilibrium mode coupling theory for supercooled liquids and glasses

چکیده

A formally exact set of equations is derived for the description of nonequilibrium phenomena in classical liquids and glasses. With the help of a non equilibrium projection operator formalism, the correlation functions and fluctuation propagators are expressed in terms of memory functions and time dependent collective frequencies. This formally exact set of equations is approximated by applying mode coupling approximations to the memory functions. The resulting set of equations for wavevector dependent correlation functions, fluctuation propagators and one-time structure factors Sq(t) generalizes the well known mode coupling theory of the glass transition to situations far away from equilibrium. Supercooled liquids under shear: A mode-coupling theory approach

We generalize the mode-coupling theory of supercooled fluids to systems under stationary shear flow. Our starting point is the generalized fluctuating hydrodynamic equations with a convection term. The method is applied to a two dimensional colloidal suspension. The shear rate dependence of the intermediate scattering function and shear viscosity is analyzed. The results show a drastic reductio...

Barrier Softening near the onset of Non-Activated Transport in Supercooled Liquids: Implications for Establishing Detailed Connection between Thermodynamic and Kinetic Anomalies in Supercooled Liquids

According to the Random First Order Transition (RFOT) theory of glasses, the barriers for activated dynamics in supercooled liquids vanish as the temperature of a viscous liquid approaches the dynamical transition temperature from below. This occurs due to a decrease of the surface tension between local meta-stable molecular arrangements much like at a spinodal. The dynamical transition thus re...

Supercooled Liquids and Glasses

Glasses are materials that are much more common in our daily life than one might naively expect. Apart from the obvious (inorganic) glasses, such as wine glasses, bottles and windows, we also have the organic (often polymeric) glasses, such as most plastic materials (bags, coatings, etc.). In the last few years also metallic glasses have come to our daily (St. Andrews) life since they are used,...

Computer Simulations of Supercooled Liquids and Glasses

After a brief introduction to the dynamics of supercooled liquids, we discuss some of the advantages and drawbacks of computer simulations of such systems. Subsequently we present the results of computer simulations in which the dynamics of a fragile glass former, a binary Lennard-Jones system, is compared to the one of a strong glass former, SiO2. This comparison gives evidence that the reason...

Mode-coupling as a Landau theory of the glass transition

We derive the Mode Coupling Theory (MCT) of the glass transition as a Landau theory, formulated as an expansion of the exact dynamical equations in the difference between the correlation function and its plateau value. This sheds light on the universality of MCT predictions. While our expansion generates higher order non-local corrections that modify the standard MCT equations, we find that the...
